Place Bellecour: Lyon’s Heart, 10 Minutes’ Walk from the Hotel

The true centre of Lyon, Place Bellecour spans 63,000 m², making it the largest square in Lyon and one of the largest in France. Surrounded by ochre 18th-century facades, it is the ideal starting point for exploring the Presqu’île, the dynamic peninsula stretching between the Rhône and the Saône.

The Square and Surroundings

The Equestrian Statue of Louis XIV

At the centre of the square stands the bronze equestrian statue of Louis XIV, installed in 1825 — a replacement for the original destroyed during the Revolution. It has become one of the most photographed symbols of Lyon, with the Fourvière basilica visible on the hillside in the background.

The Presqu’île: Shopping and Neighbourhood Life

North of Bellecour, the Presqu’île concentrates Lyon’s main shopping streets: the pedestrianised Rue de la République, Rue Victor Hugo (boutiques and bookshops) and the 19th-century covered passages. The market at Place Carnot nearby is ideal for discovering local produce.

Rue Mercière and the Bouchons

Just steps from Bellecour, Rue Mercière and its side streets are home to a concentration of traditional bouchons lyonnais and restaurants — the address for lunch or dinner in the authentic bistro atmosphere of the Presqu’île.

Les Halles Paul Bocuse

About 30 minutes on foot to the east (or by public transport), the Halle de Lyon – Paul Bocuse brings together the region’s finest producers and artisans: cheeses from Mère Richard, chocolatiers, charcutiers, fishmongers and much more.
