Dominating Lyon from its hilltop, the Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvi\u00e8re is the city’s most iconic spiritual and architectural landmark. Built between 1872 and 1884, its esplanade offers one of the most spectacular panoramas over the Lyon rooftops, the confluence of the Rh\u00f4ne and Sa\u00f4ne rivers, and on a clear day, the Alps on the horizon.<\/p>\n
Even before stepping inside, the esplanade makes the journey worthwhile. The 180\u00b0 view sweeps across the Presqu’\u00eele, Vieux Lyon, the Croix-Rousse hill and Lyon’s eastern districts. A postcard panorama you’ll want to photograph from every angle.<\/p>\n
The interior of the basilica is strikingly ornate: golden mosaics covering hundreds of square metres, polychrome stained glass windows, side chapels lined with coloured marble and monumental sculptures. The contrast with the Gothic sobriety of Vieux Lyon below is remarkable.<\/p>\n
Beneath the basilica, the Romanesque crypt offers a more intimate atmosphere. The adjacent Fourvi\u00e8re Museum traces the history of the sanctuary and Marian devotion in Lyon since the Middle Ages. Guided tours allow access to areas usually closed to the public.<\/p>\n
A short walk from the basilica, the Roman theatres of Lugdunum (1st century BC) are among the best preserved in France. Free entry, with remarkable views over the city from the stone tiers. In summer, they host the Nuits de Fourvi\u00e8re festival of outdoor concerts and performances.<\/p>\n

From Vieux Lyon, the Mont\u00e9e du Gourguillon or the Escalier des Lazaristes lead up to Fourvi\u00e8re on foot in 20\u201325 minutes. The effort is rewarded with successive viewpoints over the Renaissance rooftops below.<\/p>\n
